FLASH: There’s danger in them waters.

Juan Orlandini, Chief Technology Officer, North America & Distinguished Engineer on Tuesday, September 20, 2011

FLASH is fast! That's the banner everyone's been waving for a while. We've all bought into it. I sure have. My shiny new MacBook Air with SSD feels much faster than anything I've ever had. As my teenager says, "it's crazy fast." Applications load essentially instantly. The same has to be true for the fancier enterprise SSDs, right? Spinning disk is dead! Dead I tell you!

NetApp ONTAP 8.1 Beta in Datalink Labs

Datalink on Monday, August 08, 2011

Last week, I sat in on the kickoff of an exciting new Datalink labs project at our headquarters in Chanhassen, MN: a team of NetApp ninjas working with our guys to build a four-node ONTAP 8.1 beta V-series cluster running a combination of NetApp and non-NetApp disk storage under the covers.

PST / NST files: Concerns and implications

Datalink on Monday, July 11, 2011

We've all received messages from our IT departments stating that our mailboxes are approaching the company-defined quotas, and that we must “clean” our mailboxes to reduce their size. So what do we do? We can selectively delete messages that we “think” we don’t need, then of course Murphy’s Law kicks in and we need to [...]

Why is storage growth so high?

Juan Orlandini, Chief Technology Officer, North America & Distinguished Engineer on Monday, June 27, 2011

We never seem to have enough space. I keep talking about the good old days when I did this or that, and it's starting to make me feel like an old codger. But, there're lessons to be learned in what we did before. So, let me tell you another story.

On the exit strategy

Juan Orlandini, Chief Technology Officer, North America & Distinguished Engineer on Wednesday, June 22, 2011

All tech becomes obsolete at some point. I've had the pleasure of discussing IT with CIOs across a number of industries for many years. Surprisingly, only a few of them have told me that they worry about exit strategies for their technology. As simple as it might sound, at some point, all technology becomes obsolete. CIOs generally [...]

Lab Advocates / HNAS Testing

Datalink on Tuesday, June 07, 2011

My colleague Datalink Solutions Architect Joe Akerson is what we call a lab advocate, which means he's a Datalink technical person who has steroids-super-powers in our labs. Joe does much internal- and external-facing work on his own and in teams, and also mentors his peers to help them get their stuff done in labs. Today, we have about two dozen lab advocates across the country.

Speaking of restores

vStorage VADP APIs I mentioned before that the vStorage APIs are VMware's new, better, faster, cooler, and usable method to do backups and storage better. It's time we explore the backup side a little bit more.

Welcome. Let’s explore Datalink Labs.

Greetings, friend. I'm Datalink Staff Engineer Rick Shangle, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to yammer with you via Datalink's blogtwittertubesystem.

It’s all about the primitives (cont.)

Juan Orlandini, Chief Technology Officer, North America & Distinguished Engineer on Wednesday, May 04, 2011

In my previous post, I discussed two of vSphere’s 4.1 "primitives." Today, I’ll dig into hardware-assisted locking. Like the other primitives, this is a specific function that the arrays’ vendors can choose to implement.

In this previous post I introduced the VMware vStorage APIs. It’s time to explore this a bit further.
